The fifth graders decorated portfolios to keep their work in after looking at and discussing illuminated manuscript letters. This year the fifth graders will be keeping all their work in their portfolios in order to reflect on and assess their work throughout the year. They will also be choosing their own work for the art show this year and writing artist statements about the work they choose.
The fifth graders looked at the paintings by the Italian painter Archimbaldo and the American contemporary artist Ryan McGuiness. They then drew their profile self portraits filling their heads with symbols that represent their identities. The first graders drew self portraits of themselves when they grow up. They used oil pastel and watercolor. The kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders celebrated international dot day by reading The Dot by Peter H Reynolds. They then created their own dots in a variety of materials. The students overlapped dots, created not dots, multicolor dots, and even used dots to make up other things. The third graders enlarged and transformed lego figures into themselves. They used value to make their lego figures faces to look three dimensional and used rubbing plates and watercolor to create a textured background. Grades K through 3 are making crazy crayons and learning that in art we collaborate and we think outside of the box! Construction paper crayon on colored paper looks so great!
